Research Internship Day 2024

December 6, 2024

On November 8th 2024, Baylor Undergraduate Research in Science & Technology (BURST) hosted its annual Research & Internship Day symposium at the Hurd Welcome Center. This key event celebrates and showcases the work of undergraduate researchers across the campus. The symposium featured a range of activities designed to highlight the importance of research and provide valuable networking opportunities for students. Attendees participated in Summer Internship Sessions, an Undergraduate Poster Session, and a keynote address by Dr. Harry Fred Tibbals, a Baylor Alumni and Research Professor in the School of Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington.

A key component of the event was the opportunity for undergraduates interested in Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) to interact with representatives from several prestigious programs and universities, including Baylor College of Medicine’s SMART Program, Texas A&M University, UTHealth San Antonio, and the MD Anderson CATALYST Program. These representatives provided valuable insights on how to apply for summer internships and research opportunities and what to expect at different internship programs. Undergraduate researchers at Baylor and Baylor undergraduates who conducted summer research at other institutions presented their findings across various disciplines. Posters covered fields such as biology, chemistry, biochemistry, human health and performance, communication sciences, anthropology, psychology, neuroscience, and mathematics. The poster presentations were evaluated based on their abstracts, visuals, and oral presentations, with winners selected in each division.

The following students were recognized for outstanding poster presentations in their respective fields:

  • Lydia Allabaugh (Biology)
  • Liana Vuu (Chemistry & Biochemistry)
  • Jordyn Sin (HHPR/Pre-health)
  • Luna S. Orozco (Communication Sciences & Disorders/Anthropology)
  • Sarah Sohail Jewanee (Psychology & Neuroscience)
  • Riley Wills (Mathematics & Engineering)

The event provided an excellent platform for Baylor's undergraduates to connect, share their research, and explore future opportunities in the fields of science, technology, and healthcare.
